Hyperextension injuries of the spine.

چکیده

Little has been written about hyperextension injuries in comparison with other mechanisms of’ injury to the spine. Probably the explanation for this is that in the cervical spine hyperextension injuries are much more difficult to diagnose radiologically, and in consequence proportionately fewer of these injuries are diagnosed by surgeons and radiologists than are flexion and vertical compression lesions. It is also possible that because ofthe inherent stability that remains after most hyperextension injuries there has been little to excite controversy between the surgical and conservative schools as to the correct method of early management, or discussion on the relative merits ofdifferent surgical approaches to the problem. Extension injuries of the thoracic and lumbar spines appear to be so rare that they fail to excite much comment. The varying pattern of hyperextension injuries has been studied over the last five years, and it is proposed to correlate the clinical and pathological findings from patients admitted to the Victorian Spinal Injuries Centre at the Austin Hospital between January 1965 and December 1969, and to discuss these in relation to a proposed sub-classification of hyperextension injuries of the spine.

Objective: High load and intensity exercises often begin in the early teenage years and therefore the risk of musculoskeletal and overuse injuries sush as spine injuries among young athletes increases in most sports fields, especially in young athletes at overhead and throwing sports. The purpose of this study was to review the kinesiopathology of thoracolumbar spine injuries in throwing and ov...

Delayed leg paraplegia associated with hyperextension injury in patients with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH): case report and review of the literature

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is characterized by calcifications and ossification of ligaments and tendon insertions. The patients with DISH are susceptible to spinal column injury with trivial trauma due to immobilization of vertebrae and this easily leads to spinal cord injury. However, only few reports on hyperextension injuries of the thoracolumbar spine with DISH exist. H...

A Rare Hyperextension Injury in Thoracic Spine Presenting with Delayed Paraplegia

Hyperextension injury in the thoracic spine is uncommon with only a few cases documented in the literature. The mechanism of these injuries is hyperextension combined with axial or shearing force. These types of injuries are associated with a high risk of dural tears and paraplegia. A 91-year-old female presented with acute back pain from a hyperextension injury in thoracic spine with no neurol...

Acute injuries of the upper thoracic spine associated with paraplegia.

A review of 35 cases of acute injury of the upper thoracic spine associated with paraplegia was done. In 32, a fracture-dislocation was present; in two, there was a dislocation without associated fracture; and in one, neither fracture nor dislocation was identified. A total of 22 cases conformed to a pattern of injury consisting of anterior fracture dislocation with disruption of the intervenin...

Double Level Extension-Distraction Thoracic Spine Injuries with Concomitant Double Level Sternal Fractures:A Case Report

Extension-distraction injuries caused by hyperextension of the spine typically occur in the cervical region, as seen in “whiplash” injuries. This type of injury is rare in the thoracolumbar spine, comprising less than 3% of fractures in this region . Denis and Burkus described it as “lumberjack paraplegia” as most patients with this injury were struck in the back by a falling tree . Rare instan...
